Abstract: A non-linear functional is given that governs the loss, respectively gain, of (doubly degenerate) eigenvalues of fourth order differential operators on the line. Apart from factorizing as , providing several explicit examples, and deriving various relations between , and eigenfunctions of , we find and such that is isospectral to the free operator up to one (multiplicity 2) eigenvalue . Not unexpectedly, this choice of , leads to exact solutions of the corresponding time-dependent PDE's.
