Abstract: Let m, k1, and k2 be three integers with mge2. For any set AsubseteqmathbbZm and ninmathbbZm, let hatrk1,k2(A,n) denote the number of solutions of the equation n=k1a1+k2a2 with a1,a2inA. In this paper, using exponential sums, we characterize all m, k1, k2, and A for which hatrk1,k2(A,n)=hatrk1,k2(mathbbZmsetminusA,n) for all ninmathbbZm. We also pose several problems for further research.
