The authors give an elementary proof of the fact that the projection from the space of all symmetric \(p\times p\) matrices onto a linear subspace is positive if and only if the subspace is a Jordan algebra. The proof is based on the concept of an hyperorthogonal \(p\)-tuple of vectors in \(\mathbb{R}^n\).
