Abstract: For a commutative ring , a polynomial is called separable if is a separable -algebra. We derive formulae for the number of separable polynomials when , extending a result of L. Carlitz. For instance, we show that the number of separable polynomials in that are separable is where is the prime factorisation of and is Euler's totient function.
