Abstract: Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of any characteristic. We apply the Hamburger-Noether process of successive quadratic transformations to show the equivalence of two definitions of the {L}ojasiewicz exponent $mathfrakL(mathfraka)$ of an ideal $mathfrakasubsetk[[x,y]]$.
