Abstract: We study the set of orientation preserving diffeomorphisms of which differ from the identity by a H"older -mapping, where and . We show that forms a group, but left translations in are in general discontinuous. The groups (with its natural Fr'echet topology) and (with its natural inductive locally convex topology) however are Lie groups for any slowly vanishing modulus of continuity . In particular, is a topological group and a so-called half-Lie group (with smooth right translations). We prove that the H"older spaces are ODE closed, in the sense that pointwise time-dependent -vector fields have unique flows in . This includes, in particular, all Bochner integrable functions . For the latter and , we show that the flow map , , is continuous (even ), for every . As an application we prove that the corresponding Trouv'e group from image analysis coincides with the connected component of the identity of .
