Abstract: Let be the solvable Baumslag-Solitar group, where . We study representations of by homeomorphisms of closed surfaces with (pseudo-)Anosov elements. That is, we consider a closed surface , and homeomorphisms such that , for some . It is known that (or some power of ) must be homotopic to the identity. Suppose that is pseudo-Anosov with stretch factor . We show that is not a faithful representation of if . Moreover, we show that there are no faithful representations of by torus homeomorphisms with an Anosov map and area preserving (regardless of the value of ).
