Abstract: The Schur Theorem says that if is a group whose center has finite index , then the order of the derived group is finite and bounded by a number depending only on . In the present paper we show that if is a finite group such that has rank , then the rank of is -bounded. We also show that a similar result holds for a large class of infinite groups.
