Abstract: Let fraka denote an ideal in a commutative Noetherian ring R and M a finitely generated R-module. In this paper, we introduce the concept of the cohomological dimension filtration mathscrM=Mii=0c, where c=mcd(fraka,M) and Mi denotes the largest submodule of M such that mcd(fraka,Mi)leqi. Some properties of this filtration are investigated. In particular, in the case that (R,frakm) is local and c=dimM, we are able to determine the annihilator of the top local cohomology module Hfrakac(M). In fact, it is shown that mAnnR(Hfrakac(M))=mAnnR(M/Mc−1). As a consequence, it follows that there exists an ideal frakb of R such that mAnnR(Hfrakac(M))=mAnnR(M/Hfrakb0(M)).
