Abstract: Consider the action of GL(n,mathbbQp) on the p-adic unit sphere mathcalSn arising from the linear action on mathbbQpnsetminus0. We show that for the action of a semigroup mathfrakS of GL(n,mathbbQp) on mathcalSn, the following are equivalent: (1) mathfrakS acts distally on mathcalSn. (2) the closure of the image of mathfrakS in PGL(n,mathbbQp) is a compact group. On mathcalSn, we consider the `affine' maps overlineTa corresponding to T in GL(n,mathbbQp) and a nonzero a in mathbbQpn satisfying |T1(a)|p<1. We show that there exists a compact open subgroup V, which depends on T, such that overlineTa is distal for every nonzero ainV if and only if T acts distally on mathcalSn. The dynamics of `affine' maps on p-adic unit spheres is quite different from that on the real unit spheres.
