Abstract: Let H be a separable Hilbert space, Ac:mathcalDcsubsetHoH a densely defined unbounded operator, bounded from below, let mathcalDmin be the domain of the closure of Ac and mathcalDmax that of the adjoint. Assume that mathcalDmax with the graph norm is compactly contained in H and that mathcalDmin has finite positive codimension in mathcalDmax. Then the set of domains of selfadjoint extensions of Ac has the structure of a finite-dimensional manifold mathfrakSA and the spectrum of each of its selfadjoint extensions is bounded from below. If zeta is strictly below the spectrum of A with a given domain mathcalD0inmathfrakSA, then zeta is not in the spectrum of A with domain mathcalDinmathfrakSA near mathcalD0. But mathfrakSA contains elements mathcalD0 with the property that for every neighborhood U of mathcalD0 and every zetainmathbbR there is mathcalDinU such that mathrmspec(AmathcalD)cap(infty, zeta)eemptyset. We characterize these "spectrally unstable" domains as being those satisfying a nontrivial relation with the domain of the Friedrichs extension of Ac.
