Abstract: Let (C(t))tinR be a cosine function in a unital Banach algebra. We show that if suptinRVertC(t)cos(t)Vertextless2 for some continuous scalar bounded cosine function (c(t))tinR, then the closed subalgebra generated by (C(t))tinR is isomorphic to Ck for some positive integer k. If, further, suptinRVertC(t)cos(t)Vertextless8over3sqrt3, or if c(t)=I, then C(t)=c(t) for tinR.
