Nonsimplicity of certain universal C^-algebras

Abstract: Given , such that for and for , and integers , we show that the universal -algebra generated by unitaries such that for is not simple if at least one exponent is at least two. We indicate how the method of proof by `working with various quotients' can be used to establish nonsimplicity of universal -algebras in other cases.
