Abstract: We consider the inverse optimization problem associated with the polynomial program f^*=min {f(x): xin K}andagivencurrentfeasiblesolutionyin K.Weprovideasystematicnumericalschemetocomputeaninverseoptimalsolution.Thatis,wecomputeapolynomial ilde{f}(whichmaybeofsamedegreeasfifdesired)withthefollowingproperties:(a)yisaglobalminimizerof ilde{f}onKwithaPutinar′scertificatewithanaprioridegreebounddfixed, and(b), ilde{f}minimizesVert f- ilde{f}Vert(whichcanbetheell_1,ell_2orell_infty−normofthecoefficients)overallpolynomialswithsuchproperties.Computing ilde{f}_dreducestosolvingasemidefiniteprogramwhoseoptimalvaluealsoprovidesaboundonhowfarisf(y)fromtheunknownoptimalvaluef^*.Thesizeofthesemidefiniteprogramcanbeadaptedtothecomputationalcapabilitiesavailable.Moreover,ifoneusestheell_1−norm,then ilde{f}$ takes a simple and explicit canonical form. Some variations are also discussed.
