Abstract: The maximal commutative subalgebras containing only Toeplitz matrices have been identified as generalized circulants. A similar simple description cannot be obtained for block Toeplitz matrices. We introduce and investigate certain families of maximal commutative algebras of block Toeplitz matrices.
