Abstract: For any curve mathcalV in a toric surface X, we study the critical locus S(mathcalV) of the moment map mu from mathcalV to its compactified amoeba mu(mathcalV). We show that for curves mathcalV in a fixed complete linear system, the critical locus S(mathcalV) is smooth apart from some real codimension 1 walls. We then investigate the topological classification of pairs (mathcalV,S(mathcalV)) when mathcalV and S(mathcalV) are smooth. As a main tool, we use the Lyashko-Looijenga mapping (mathcalLL) relative to the logarithmic Gauss map gamma:mathcalVightarrowmathbbCP1. We prove two statements concerning mathcalLL that are crucial for our study: the map mathcalLL is algebraic; the map mathcalLL extends to nodal curves. It allows us to construct many examples of pairs (mathcalV,S(mathcalV)) by perturbing nodal curves.
