Abstract: In this paper, we use the tools of Gr"{o}bner bases and combinatorial secant varieties to study the determinantal ideals It of the extended Hankel matrices. Denote by c-chain a sequence a1,...,ak with ai+c<ai+1 for all i=1,...,k−1. Using the results of c-chain, we solve the membership problem for the symbolic powers It(s) and we compute the primary decomposition of the product It1...Itk of the determinantal ideals. Passing through the initial ideals and algebras we prove that the product It1...Itk has a linear resolution and the multi-homogeneous Rees algebra Rees(It1,...,Itk) is defined by a Gr"obner basis of quadrics.

Let \(I_t\) be the determinantal ideal of an extended Hankel matrix whose entries are some variables of a polynomial ring. These ideals define interesting geometric objects; \(I_2\) is the defining ideal of a rational normal scroll in a projective space and its \((t-1)\)-st secant variety is defined by \(I_t\). Exploring/using properties of c-chains, of secant ideals and of certain initial ideals the paper gives Gröbner bases for the symbolic powers \(I_t^{(s)}\) of \(I_t\), describes \(I_t^{(s)}\) in terms of suitable powers of \(I_t\) and computes primary decomposition of the product \(I_{t_1}\cdots I_{t_k}\). It also shows that \(I_{t_1}\cdots I_{t_k}\) has a linear resolution and a square-free quadratic Gröbner basis yielding Cohen-Macaulayness and Koszulness of its multi-graded Rees algebra.
