A gluing construction for polynomial invariants

Abstract: We give a polynomial gluing construction of two groups

G_{X} s u b s e t e q G L (e l l, m a t h b b F)

and

G_{Y} s u b s e t e q G L (m, m a t h b b F)

which results in a group

G s u b s e t e q G L (e l l + m, m a t h b b F)

whose ring of invariants is isomorphic to the tensor product of the rings of invariants of

G_{X}

and

G_{Y}

. In particular, this result allows us to obtain many groups with polynomial rings of invariants, including all

p

-groups whose rings of invariants are polynomial over

m a t h b b F_{p}

, and the finite subgroups of

G L (n, m a t h b b F)

defined by sparsity patterns, which generalize many known examples.
