Abstract: Let be a complex matrix with zero trace. Then there are matrices and such that and where is the norm of as an operator on and is the Hilbert--Schmidt norm of . Moreover, the matrix can be taken to be normal. Conversely there is a zero trace matrix such that whenever , for some absolute constant .
