Local spectral properties of m-isometric operators
Let \(B(H)\) be the algebra of all bounded operators defined on a Hilbert space \(H\). Let \(m\) be a positive integer. An operator \(T\in B(H)\) is called an \(m\)-isometry if \[ \sum_{k=0}^{m}(-1)^{m-k}\binom{m}{k}{T^{\ast}}^{k}T^{k}=0, \] where \(T^{\ast}\) denotes the adjoint operator of \(T\). Equivalently, \(\sum_{k=0}^{m}(-1)^{m-k}\binom{m}{k}\|T^{k}x\|^{2}=0\) for all \(x \in H\). An operator \(T\in B(H)\) is said to have the Bishop's property \((\beta)\) if for every open subset \(U \subset \mathbb{C}\) and every sequence of analytic functions \(f_{n} : U\rightarrow H\) such that \((T-\lambda I)f_{n}(\lambda)\rightarrow 0\) as \(n\rightarrow \infty\) uniformly on all compact subsets of \(U\), it holds that \(f_{n}(\lambda)\rightarrow 0\) as \(n\rightarrow \infty\) locally uniformly on \(U\). An operator \(T\in B(H)\) is called a generalized scalar operator if there exists a continuous algebra homomorphism \(\phi: C^{\infty}(\mathbb{C})\rightarrow B(H)\) such that \(\phi(1)=I\) and \(\phi(z)=T\), where \( C^{\infty}(\mathbb{C})\) is the space of all infinitely differentiable functions defined on \(\mathbb{C}\) with values in \(\mathbb{C}\), endowed with the uniform convergence on compact sets for the function and all the partial derivations. It is well known that generalized scalar operators are decomposable. In this paper, the authors show that every \(m\)-isometry is generalized subscalar (i.e., has the generalized scalar extension), and so it has the Bishop's property \((\beta)\). Also, they show that each invertible \(m\)-isometry is generalized scalar, and so decomposable. As its immediate consequence, they get that any \(m\)-isometry in a space of dimension at least \(2\) has a proper closed invariant subspace.
