Abstract: In this paper, we investigate collinear configurations in the planar Newtonian three-body problem where the three bodies or their velocities are aligned. These configurations, also known as generalised syzygies, were previously studied by the author in [4] for bounded solutions. Here, we extend our study to negative energy cases and provide new bounds. Among other results, we present an independent proof of Montgomery's result [3] that, except for Lagrange's solution, every solution to the zero angular momentum case suffers syzygies. Our approach is algebraic and based on elementary Sturm-Liouville theory.
