Abstract: Consider a regular domain OmegasubsetmathbbRN and let d(x)=operatornamedist(x,partialOmega). Denote La1,infty(Omega) the space of functions from L1,infty(Omega) having absolutely continuous quasinorms. This set is essentially smaller than L1,infty(Omega) but, at the same time, essentially larger than a union of all L1,q(Omega), qin[1,infty). A classical result of late 1980's states that for pin(1,infty) and minmathbbN, u belongs to the Sobolev space W0m,p(Omega) if and only if u/dminLp(Omega) and left|ablamuight|inLp(Omega). During the consequent decades, several authors have spent considerable effort in order to relax the characterizing condition. Recently, it was proved that uinW0m,p(Omega) if and only if u/dminL1(Omega) and left|ablamuight|inLp(Omega). In this paper we show that for Ngeq1 and pin(1,infty) we have uinW01,p(Omega) if and only if u/dinLa1,infty(Omega) and left|ablauight|inLp(Omega). Moreover, we present a counterexample which demonstrates that after relaxing the condition u/dinLa1,infty(Omega) to u/dinL1,infty(Omega) the equivalence no longer holds.
