Abstract: Let F be a totally real field and nleq4 a natural number. We study the monodromy groups of any n-dimensional strictly compatible system holambdalambda of lambda-adic representations of F with distinct Hodge-Tate numbers such that holambda0 is irreducible for some lambda0. When F=mathbbQ, n=4, and holambda0 is fully symplectic, the following assertions are obtained. (i) The representation holambda is fully symplectic for almost all lambda. (ii) If in addition the similitude character mulambda0 of holambda0 is odd, then the system holambdalambda is potentially automorphic and the residual image has a subgroup conjugate to extSp4(mathbbFell) for almost all lambda.
