Abstract: Let $n$ and $s$ be fixed integers such that $ngeq2$ and $1leqsleqfracn2$. Let $M_n(mathbbK)$ be the ring of all $nimesn$ matrices over a field $mathbbK$. If a map $delta:M_n(mathbbK)ightarrow{M}_n(mathbbK)$ satisfies that $delta(xy)=delta(x)y+xdelta(y)$ for any two rank-$s$ matrices $x,yin{M}_n(mathbbK)$, then there exists a derivation $D$ of $M_n(mathbbK)$ such that $delta(x)=D(x)$ holds for each rank-$k$ matrix $xin{M}_n(mathbbK)$ with $0leqkleqs$.
