Abstract: Let us consider the group with and nonzero integers. In this paper, we study the variety of epresentations and the character variety in of the group ,obtaining by elementary methods an explicit primary decomposition of the ideal corresponding to in the coordinates , and . As an easy consequence, a formula for computing the number of irreducible components of as a function of and is given. We provide a combinatorial description of and we prove that in most cases it is possible to recover from the combinatorial structure of . Finally we compute the number of irreducible components of and study the behavior of the projection .
