Abstract: Let F be a non--Archimedean locally compact field (mcar(F)geq0), be a connected reductive group defined over F, heta be an F--automorphism of , and omega be a character of . We fix a Haar measure dg on . For a smooth irreducible (heta,omega)--stable complex representation pi of , that is such that picirchetasimeqpiotimesomega, the choice of an isomorphism A from piotimesomega to picircheta defines a distribution ThetapiA, called the og (A--)twisted character of pifg: for a compactly supported locally constant function f on , we put ThetapiA(f)=mtrace(pi(fdg)circA). In this paper, we study these distributions ThetapiA, without any restrictive hypothesis on F, or heta. We prove in particular that the restriction of ThetapiA on the open dense subset of formed of those elements which are heta--quasi--regular is given by a locally constant function, and we describe how this function behaves with respect to parabolic induction and Jacquet restriction. This leads us to take up again the Steinberg theory of automorphisms of an algebraic group, from a rationnal point of view.
