Abstract: In this paper we will show the following result: Let mathcalN be a complete (noncompact) connected orientable Riemannian three-manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature Sgeq0 and bounded sectional curvature KsleqK. Suposse that SigmasubsetmathcalN is a complete orientable connected area-minimizing cylinder so that pi1(Sigma)inpi1(mathcalN). Then mathcalN is locally isometric either to mathbbS1imesmathbbR2 or mathbbS1imesmathbbS1imesmathbbR (with the standard product metric). As a corollary, we will obtain: Let mathcalN be a complete (noncompact) connected orientable Riemannian three-manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature Sgeq0 and bounded sectional curvature KsleqK. Assume that pi1(mathcalN) contains a subgroup which is isomorphic to the fundamental group of a compact surface of positive genus. Then, mathcalN is locally isometric to mathbbS1imesmathbbS1imesmathbbR (with the standard product metric).
