Abstract: We study the boundedness problem for maximal operators mathbbM associated to averages along families of finite type curves in the plane, defined by mathbb{M}f(x) , := , sup_{1 leq t leq 2} left|int_{mathbb{C}} f(x-ty) , ho(y) , dsigma(y) ight|, where dsigma denotes the normalised Lebesgue measure over the curves mathbbC. Let riangle be the closed triangle with vertices P=(frac25,frac15),Q=(frac12,frac12),R=(0,0). In this paper, we prove that for (frac1p,frac1q)in(rianglesetminusP,Q)capleft(frac1p,frac1q):q>might, there is a constant B such that |mathbbMf|Lq(mathbbR2)leq,B,|f|Lp(mathbbR2). Furthermore, if m<5, then we have |mathbbMf|L5,infty(mathbbR2)leqB|f|Lfrac52,1(mathbbR2). We shall also consider a variable coefficient version of maximal theorem and we obtain the LpLq boundedness result for (frac1p,frac1q)inrianglecirccapleft(frac1p,frac1q):q>might, where rianglecirc is the interior of the triangle with vertices (0,0),(frac12,frac12),(frac25,frac15). An application is given to obtain LpLq estimates for solution to higher order, strictly hyperbolic pseudo-differential operators.
