Abstract: We prove that the smallest non-trivial quotient of the mapping class group of a connected orientable surface of genus at least 3 without punctures is , thus confirming a conjecture of Zimmermann. In the process, we generalise Korkmaz's results on -linear representations of mapping class groups to projective representations over any field.
Residual properties and generalizations; residually finite groups (20E26) Geometric group theory (20F65) Finite simple groups and their classification (20D05) 2-dimensional topology (including mapping class groups of surfaces, Teichmüller theory, curve complexes, etc.) (57K20)
