Abstract: Positivstellens"atze for polynomials, such as that of P'olya and Handelman, are known to be concrete instances of the abstract Representation Theorem for (commutative unital) rings. We generalise the Representation Theorem to modules over rings. When this module consists of all symmetric matrices with entries in the polynomial ring, our generalisation of the Representation Theorem becomes the corresponding generalisations of P'olya's and Handelman's Positivstellens"atze to symmetric matrices with polynomial entries. These generalisations were previously obtained by Scherer and Hol, and L^e and Du' respectively, using the method of effective estimates from analysis.
