Abstract: A commuting tuple of operators (S1,dots,Sn1,P), defined on a Hilbert space mathcalH, for which the closed symmetrized polydisc [ Gamma_n =left{ left(sum_{1leq ileq n} z_i,sum_{1leq i<jleq n}z_iz_j,dots, prod_{i=1}^n z_i ight): ,|z_i|leq 1, i=1,dots,n ight } ] is a spectral set, is called a Gamman- extit{contraction}. A Gamman-contraction is said to be extit{pure} or C.0 if P is C.0, that is, if Pnightarrow0 strongly as nightarrowinfty. We show that for any Gamman-contraction (S1,dots,Sn1,P), there is a unique operator tuple (A1,dots,An1) that satisfies the operator identities [ S_i-S_{n-i}^*P=D_PA_iD_P,, quad quad i=1,dots, n-1. ] This unique tuple is called the extit{fundamental operator tuple} or mathcalFO-tuple of (S1,dots,Sn1,P). With the help of the mathcalFO-tuple, we construct an operator model for a C.0;Gamman-contraction and show that there exist n1 operators C1,dots,Cn1 such that each Si can be represented as Si=Ci+PCni. We find an explicit minimal dilation for a class of C.0;Gamman-contractions whose mathcalFO-tuples satisfy a certain condition. Also we establish that the mathcalFO-tuple of (S1,dots,Sn1,P) together with the characteristic function of P constitute a complete unitary invariant for the C.0 Gamman-contractions. The entire program is an analogue of the Nagy-Foias theory for C.0 contractions.
