Abstract: A uniformly bounded complete orthonormal system of functions Theta=hetann=1infty, |hetan|Linfty[0,1]leqM is constructed such that sumn=1inftyanhetan converges almost everywhere on [0,1] if ann=1inftyin,l2 and sumn=1inftyanhetan diverges a. e. for any ann=1inftyotin,l2. Thus Menshov's theorem on the representation of measurable, almost everywhere finite, functions by almost everywhere convergent trigonometric series cannot be extended to the class of uniformly bounded complete orthonormal systems.
