Abstract: Let be open. We investigate conditions under which an operator on has a continuous kernel . In the centre of our interest is the condition , which one knows for many semigroups generated by elliptic operators. This condition implies that has a kernel in if is self-adjoint and is bounded, and the power is best possible. We also analyse Mercer's theorem in our context.
Linear operators belonging to operator ideals (nuclear, (p)-summing, in the Schatten-von Neumann classes, etc.) (47B10) Integral operators (47G10)
