Abstract: Let mathcalH be a complex, separable Hilbert space, and mathcalB(mathcalH) denote the set of all bounded linear operators on mathcalH. Given an orthogonal projection PinmathcalB(mathcalH) and an operator DinmathcalB(mathcalH), we may write relative to the decomposition mathcalH=mathrmran,Poplusmathrmran,(IP). In this paper we study the question: for which non-negative integers j,k can we find a normal operator D and an orthogonal projection P such that mathrmrank,D2=j and mathrmrank,D3=k? Complete results are obtained in the case where mathrmdim, mathcalH<infty, and partial results are obtained in the infinite-dimensional setting.
