Abstract: Let be a complex, separable Hilbert space, and denote the set of all bounded linear operators on . Given an orthogonal projection and an operator , we may write relative to the decomposition . In this paper we study the question: for which non-negative integers can we find a normal operator and an orthogonal projection such that and ? Complete results are obtained in the case where , and partial results are obtained in the infinite-dimensional setting.
