Abstract: In this article we consider smooth projective curves of genus two described by integral equations of the form , where is monic of degree . It turns out that if is reducible, then the absolute discriminant of can never be an odd prime, except when and is irreducible. In this case we obtain a complete description of such genus curves. In fact, we prove that there are two one-parameter families , , of such curves such that if is a genus two curve with an odd prime absolute discriminant, then is , for some , and . Moreover, we show that has an odd prime absolute discriminant, , if and only if a certain degree- irreducible polynomial takes the value at . Hence there are conjecturally infinitely many such curves. When is irreducible, we give explicit examples of one-parameter families of genus curves such that has an odd prime absolute discriminant for conjecturally infinitely many integer values .
