Abstract: Suppose mathcalK is N-dimensional local field of characteristic p, mathcalG=mathopGal(mathcalKsep/mathcalK), mathcalG<p is the maximal quotient of mathcalG of period p and nilpotent class <p and mathcalK<psubsetmathcalKsep is such that mathopGal(mathcalK<p/mathcalK)=mathcalG<p. We use nilpotent Artin-Schreier theory to identify mathcalG<p with the group G(mathcalL) obtained from a profinite Lie mathbbFp-algebra mathcalL via the Campbell-Hausdorff composition law. The canonical mathcalP-topology on mathcalK is used to define a dense Lie subalgebra mathcalLmathcalP in mathcalL. The algebra mathcalLmathcalP can be provided with a system of mathcalP-topological generators and its mathcalP-open subalgebras correspond to all N-dimensional extensions of mathcalK in mathcalK<p. These results are applied to higher local fields K of characteristic 0 containing primitive p-th root of unity. If Gamma=mathopGal(Kalg/K) we introduce similarly the quotient Gamma<p=G(L), a dense mathbbFp-Lie algebra LmathcalPsubsetL, and describe the structure of LmathcalP in terms of generators and relations. The general result is illustrated by explicit presentation of Gamma<p modulo third commutators.
