Abstract: Let mathcalB(mathcalH) be the algebra of all bounded linear operators on the Hilbert space mathcalH. For a positive integer k less than the dimension of mathcalH and mathbfA=(A1,dots,Am)inmathcalB(mathcalH)m, the joint k-numerical range Wk(mathbfA) is the set of vector (alpha1,dots,alpham)inmathbbCm such that alphai=sumj=1klangleAixj,xjangle for an orthonormal set x1,ldots,xk in mathcalH. Geometrical properties of Wk(mathbfA) and their relations with the algebraic properties of A1,dots,Am are investigated in this paper. For example, conditions for Wk(mathbfA) to be convex are studied. Descriptions are given for the closure of Wk(mathbfA) and the closure of mconv,Wk(mathbfA) in terms of the joint essential numerical range of mathbfA for infinite dimensional operators A1,dots,Am. Characterizations are obtained for Wk(mathbfA) or mconv,Wk(mathbfA) to be closed. It is shown that Wk(mathbfA) is a polyhedral set if and only if A1,dots,Ak have a common reducing subspace mathbfV of finite dimension such that the compression of A1,dots,Am on the subspace mathbfV are diagonal operators D1,dots,Dm and Wk(mathbfA)=Wk(D1,dots,Dm). Similar results are obtained for such that the closure of Wk(mathbfA) is polyhedral. Classifications are given for operators satisfying (1) A1,dots,Am is a commuting family of normal operators, or (2) Wk(A1,dots,Am) is polyhedral for every positive integer k less than dimmathcalH.
