Abstract: Let extMod(Sg) be the mapping class group of the closed orientable surface of genus ggeq1, and let extLModp(X) be the liftable mapping class group associated with a finite-sheeted branched cover p:SoX, where X is a hyperbolic surface. For kgeq2, let pk:Sk(g1)+1oSg be the standard k-sheeted regular cyclic cover. In this paper, we derive an explicit finite generating sets for extLModpk(Sg) for ggeq3 and kgeq2, and extLModp2(S2). For ggeq2, as an application of our main result, we also derive a generating set for extLModp2(Sg)capCextMod(Sg)(iota), where CextMod(Sg)(iota) is the centralizer of the hyperelliptic involution iotainextMod(Sg). Let mathcalL be the infinite ladder surface, and let qg:mathcalLoSg be the standard infinite-sheeted cover induced by langlehg1angle where h is the standard handle shift on mathcalL. As another application, we derive a finite generating set for extLModqg(Sg). Finally, we establish that for kgeq2 and ggeq2, extLModpk(Sg) is self-normalizing in extMod(Sg).
