Abstract: Let Tf denote the Toeplitz operator on the Hardy space H2(mathbbT) and let Tn(f) be the corresponding nimesn Toeplitz matrix. In this paper, we characterize the compactness of the operators T|f|2−TfToverlinef and T|ildef|2−TildefToverlineildef, where ildef(z)=f(z−1), in terms of the convergence of the sequence Tn(|f|2)−Tn(f)Tn(overlinef) in the sense of singular value clustering. Hence we obtain a method to check the compactness of semicommutators of Toeplitz operators using the matrices obtained from the Fourier coefficients of the symbol function (Toeplitz matrices). The function space VMOcapLinfty(mathbbT) is the largest C∗-subalgebra of Linfty(mathbbT) with the property that whenever f,ginVMOcapLinfty(mathbbT), Tfg−TfTg is compact. In this article, we obtain a characterization of VMOcapLinfty(mathbbT) in terms of the convergence of Tn(fg)−Tn(f)Tn(g) in the sense of singular value clustering. To be precise, VMOcapLinfty(mathbbT) is the largest C∗-subalgebra of Linfty(mathbbT) with the property that whenever f,ginVMOcapLinfty(mathbbT), Tn(fg)−Tn(f)Tn(g) converges in the sense of singular value clustering.
