Abstract: Let be a group and be a ring. We define the Gorenstein homological dimension of over , denoted by , as the Gorenstein flat dimension of trivial -module . It is proved that for any flat extension of commutative rings ; in particular, is a refinement of if is -torsion-free. We show a Gorenstein homological version of Serre's theorem, i.e. for any subgroup of with finite index. As an application, is a finite group if and only if ; this is different from the fact that the homological dimension of any non-trivial finite group is infinity.
