Abstract: We analyze the relationship between Bott periodicity in topological $K$-theory and the natural periodicity of cyclic homology. This is a basis for understanding the multiplicativity, in odd dimensions, of a bivariant Chern-Connes character from $K$-theory to cyclic theory.
