Abstract: The SU(2) unitary matrix U employed in hadronic low-energy processes has both exponential and analytic representations, related by U=expleft[imathbfaucdothatmathbfpiheta, ight]=coshetaI+imathbfaucdothatmathbfpisinheta. One extends this result to the SU(3) unitary matrix by deriving an analytic expression which, for Gell-Mann matrices mathbflambda, reads U=expleft[imathbfvcdotmathbflambdaight]=left[left(F+frac23Gight)I+left(Hhatmathbfv+frac1sqrt3Ghatmathbfbight)cdotmathbflambda,ight]+ileft[left(Y+frac23Zight)I+left(Xhatmathbfv+frac1sqrt3Zhatmathbfbight)cdotmathbflambdaight], with vi=[,v1,cdotsv8,], bi=dijk,vj,vk, and factors F,cdotsZ written in terms of elementary functions depending on v=|mathbfv| and eta=2,dijk,hatvi,hatvj,hatvk/3. This result does not depend on the particular meaning attached to the variable mathbfv and the analytic expression is used to calculate explicitly the associated left and right forms. When mathbfv represents pseudoscalar meson fields, the classical limit corresponds to langle0|eta|0angleightarrowetaightarrow0 and yields the cyclic structure U=leftleft[frac13left(1+2cosvight)I+frac1sqrt3left(1+cosvight)hatmathbfbcdotmathbflambdaight]+ileft(sinvight)hatmathbfvcdotmathbflambdaight, which gives rise to a tilted circumference with radius sqrt2/3 in the space defined by I, hatmathbfbcdotmathbflambda, and hatmathbfvcdotmathbflambda. The axial transformations of the analytic matrix are also evaluated explicitly.
