Abstract: Let GammasubsetmathbbC be a curve of class C(2,alpha). For z0 in the unbounded component of mathbbCsetminusGamma, and for n=1,2,..., let un be a probability measure with supp(un)subsetGamma which minimizes the Bergman function Bn(u,z):=sumk=0n|qku(z)|2 at z0 among all probability measures u on Gamma (here, q0u,ldots,qnu are an orthonormal basis in L2(u) for the holomorphic polynomials of degree at most n). We show that unn tends weak-* to hatdeltaz0, the balayage of the point mass at z0 onto Gamma, by relating this to an optimization problem for probability measures on the unit circle. Our proof makes use of estimates for Faber polynomials associated to Gamma.
