Abstract: This article is a first step in extending Floer theory to Poisson structures which are almost everywhere symplectic, but degenerate on a lower-dimensional submanifold. In particular, here we consider log symplectic or log Poisson structures on compact real orientable surfaces. We refine Radko's classification of these structures by giving an explicit description of their degeneracy loci in terms of bipartite graphs. The main result of the article is the definition of Lagrangian intersection Floer cohomology, referred to as log Floer cohomology, for these log symplectic surfaces. We show that this cohomology is invariant under suitable Hamiltonian isotopies (referred to as admissible) and that it is isomorphic to log de Rham cohomology for a single Lagrangian.
