Abstract: Let T be the map defined on N by T(n)=fracn2 if n is even and by T(n)=frac3n+12 if n is odd. Consider the dynamical system (N,2N,u,T) where u is a finite measure equivalent to the counting measure. Define the operator U:L1(u)ightarrowL1(u) by Uf=fcircT. We show that the Collatz conjecture is equivalent to the existence of a finite measure u on (N,2N) making the operator Vf=fcircT power bounded in L1(u).
