Abstract: We study and construct maps to toric varieties. Our motivation comes from toric degenerations -- flat families whose special fibers are not-necessarily-normal toric varieties -- and the desire to construct a map from the generic to the special fiber. In the process, we give a negative answer to a question of I. Dolgachev and K. Kaveh as to whether a projective toric degeneration can be constructed as a degeneration by projection. In the classical topology over , given a proper family (not just projective one), we construct a deformation-retract from a neighborhood of the special fiber to the special fiber (using tubular neighborhoods of the strata). We recover the construction of integral systems in M. Harada and K. Kaveh. "Integrable systems, toric degenerations and okounkov bodie" and moreover extend it to the singular locus.
