Abstract: We show that complex rank 3 topological vector bundles on mathbbCP5 are determined by their Chern classes, except in the case that c1equiv0pmod3 and c2equiv0pmod3. To address this case, we produce a universal class in the tmf(3)-cohomology of a Thom spectrum related to BU(3), where tmf(3) denotes topological modular forms localized at 3. From this class and orientation data, we construct a mathbbZ/3-valued invariant of the bundles of interest and prove that our invariant separates distinct bundles with the same Chern classes.
