Abstract: In this paper we showed that the existence of a space possessing a free -complete open filter which is contained in open ultrafilters implies the existence of a measurable cardinal. This result implies a negative answer to an old question of Liu. Also, we investigate the poset of free open filters on a space . In particular, we characterize spaces for which is a lattice. For each we construct a scattered space such that is order isomorphic to the -element chain, which implies the affirmative answer to two questions of Mooney. Assuming CH we construct a scattered space such that is order isomorphic to . To prove the latter fact we introduce and investigate a new stratification of ultrafilters which depends on scattered subspaces of . We show that for each cardinal there exists a space which possesses exactly -many free open filters. The latter complements results of Pelant, Simon and Vaughan. Assuming the existence of measurable cardinals, for every we construct a space such that is order isomorphic to the direct product .
