Abstract: We consider the moment map m:mathbbPVnightarrowextimathfraku(n) for the action of extGL(n) on Vn=otimes2(mathbbCn)*otimesmathbbCn, and study the critical points of the functional Fn=|m|2:mathbbPVnightarrowmathbbR. Firstly, we prove that [mu]inmathbbPVn is a critical point if and only if extMmu=cmuI+Dmu for some cmuinmathbbR and DmuinextDer(mu), where m([mu])=fracextMmu|mu|2. Then we show that any algebra mu admits a Nikolayevsky derivation phimu which is unique up to automorphism, and if moreover, [mu] is a critical point of Fn, then phimu=frac1cmuDmu. Secondly, we characterize the maxima and minima of the functional Fn:mathcalAnightarrowmathbbR, where mathcalAn denotes the projectivization of the algebraic varieties of all n-dimensional associative algebras. Furthermore, for an arbitrary critical point [mu] of Fn:mathcalAnightarrowmathbbR, we also obtain a description of the algebraic structure of [mu]. Finally, we classify the critical points of Fn:mathcalAnightarrowmathbbR for n=2, 3, respectively.
