Abstract: Let XinsubsetmathbbRd, nge1, be a sequence of finite sets and consider a Xin-valued, irreducible, reversible, continuous-time Markov chain (Xt(n):tge0). Denote by mathscrP(mathbbRd) the set of probability measures on mathbbRd and by IncolonmathscrP(mathbbRd)o[0,+infty) the level two large deviations rate functional for Xt(n) as toinfty. We present a general method, based on tools used to prove the metastable behaviour of Markov chains, to derive a full expansion of In expressing it as In=I(0),+,sum1lepleq(1/hetan(p)),I(p), where I(p)colonmathscrP(mathbbRd)o[0,+infty] represent rate functionals independent of n and hetan(p) sequences such that hetan(1)oinfty, hetan(p)/hetan(p+1)o0 for 1lep<q. The speed hetan(p) corresponds to the time-scale at which the Markov chains Xt(n) exhibits a metastable behavior, and the I(p1) zero-level sets to the metastable states. To illustrate the theory we apply the method to random walks in potential fields.
